New Year's decoration of Rooster made of rice straw| Event report

Hello everyone. MUJI Hiroshima Parco.
This year, the season for making New Year decorations has arrived.
In Hiroshima, there are many different shapes depending on the region, such as "glasses" in Okayama and "glasses" in Kyushu, and decorations in the shape of a crane that is congratulations.
The workshop of the New Year decoration held the other day, and the lecturer was Aya Amanu Jinnai.
I was fascinated by the straw work I met when I was a college student, and is currently working as a community revitalization team in Toyoei-cho, Higashihiroshima City.
What I taught this time is the decoration of the rooster that is seen in various parts of Japan.
This rooster imitates a chicken.
Chickens tell you the sunrise at the best, so it means to bring happiness, and it seems to be a happy animal.
We only use glutinous rice straw and hemp strings from Toyoei-cho, Higashihiroshima City.
It is soft and easy to process by wetting with water and hitting it with a hammer.
We will all work together while learning from Mr. Jinnai.
It is very difficult to hold down the straw with your feet and put effort into tightness.
A tassel-shaped leg is made, and the head and tail are tied together with straw to make the shape clean.
Over the course of two hours, everyone worked hard while being covered with straw, and many wonderful rooster New Year decorations were completed.
It's a cute atmosphere, and it's all unique.
"It's cute to decorate with Yuzuriha used for New Year decorations or red mizuhiki," says Jinnai.
He talked about not only making it, but also the meanings that have been handed down from a long time ago.
New Year decorations are very familiar to us, but we just don't know anything.
Everyone was listening to the story very interestingly.
